Faculty Obituaries

Richard Allen Arndt, professor emeritus of physics in the College of Science, died April 10, 2010, in Blacksburg, Va. Arndt was a gifted and dedicated nuclear theorist and phenomenologist. A professor at Tech for more than thirty years, Arndt was also a fellow of the American Physical Society and an adjunct member of the faculty at George Washington University. His more than 50 research papers, four of which had been cited more than 100 times, provided research to help create the Scattering Analysis Interactive Dial-In network of analysis and database codes.

Milka Tcherneva Bliznakov, professor emerita of architecture in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies and a trailblazer for women in architecture, died Nov. 4, 2010. In 1974, Bliznakov joined the faculty at Virginia Tech, where she established a solid reputation as one of the most respected scholars of her generation and was a recognized authority on Russian constructivism and the avant-garde movement. Frustrated by the lack of primary research materials on women in architecture, Bliznakov founded the International Archive of Women in Architecture, which documents the history of women's contributions to the built environment.

Charles Parry, professor emeritus of mathematics in the College of Science, died Dec. 25, 2010. Parry was best known for his passion for teaching mathematics and as a relentless Appalachian Trail volunteer. A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1971, Parry established a research program in number theory and published 37 papers. He delivered invited lectures in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and the United States. He participated in the design of mathematics courses for computer science majors and was greatly admired and respected among his colleagues.
