FACULTY AND FRIENDS DEATHS

Richard Hamilton Gruenhagen, a former professor in plant pathology and Extension specialist, died Feb. 22, 2001. Gruenhagen came to Virginia Tech in 1958 to serve as professor of plant pathology and Extension plant pathologist. He continued to work at the university until his 1979 retirement as a professor and Extension specialist in the Chemical, Drug, and Pesticide Unit. Gruenhagen received the U.S.D.A. Service Award and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Alumni Association, the Association of Poison Control Centers, Virginia Extension Service Association, and the Scientific Research Society of America. He was also active with campus life when he worked at Tech. In the '60s, he and his wife served as chaperones for the German Club dances and for 13 years were sponsors for the (then) sorority Delta Rho. Gruenhagen's daughter, Mary Kay Gruenhagen Vacheresse '67, says her father "loved Tech with a passion and still cheered wildly for the teams. He enjoyed most seeing ESPN televise from Blacksburg."
