Relive the Civil War March 21-23

Join Alumni Distinguished Professor of History James I. Robertson Jr. for a trip back to the 1860s at the Virginia Tech Alumni Association's sixth annual Civil War Weekend, Friday through Sunday, March 21-23.

Robertson, joined by other Civil War authors and speakers including William C. "Jack" Davis, will re-create the scenes and events of the war. Other events include a tour of Civil War artifacts in the university's archival collections, an Internet tour of historical resources, and a performance of music from the war period.

Play, learn, and relax at Summer Around the Drillfield

Imagine enjoying lectures by distinguished faculty members, or taking an informative canoe trip with Alumni Distinguished Professor of Biology George Simmons. Then sit back with fellow Hokies to watch the mountain sunset after a day of learning, hiking the Cascades trail, tubing the New River, or relaxing at Mountain Lake.

Alumnet service now free online

The Virginia Tech Alumnet service is now available free of charge on the Internet at http://vt.alumnet.com or subscribe@vt.alumnet.com. You can join at least 3,000 other alumni who are reading the latest news from alumni chapters, visiting friends' homepages, touring the campus, or conversing with other Hokies in a live chat room every Tuesday night. You can even shop for Virginia Tech items such as sweatshirts, caps, mugs, and much more.

Online access to the alumni directory is also available by subscription. From Alumnet, you can log onto the Virginia Tech Homepage, which is only a few jumps ("About the University," then "Electronic Publications") to the new, online Virginia Tech Magazine. Or, log on directly to the magazine at http://vt.edu.unirel.vtmag/.

Career development workshop slated

A seminar entitled "Recharge Your Career" will be offered on campus for alumni Feb. 22-23.

Spend a weekend at Virginia Tech learning the skills to manage your career in order to have employment that is fulfilling and focused on your future. Registration is $75 per person. Lodging is available at the Donaldson Brown Hotel for $60 per night plus tax.

The weekend includes a career-goal assessment by career-development authority Carl McDaniels, as well as a self-assessment session with the professionals in the Virginia Tech Career Services office and an exploration of the opportunities available. Using the on-campus resources of Career Services, you will be able to discover what careers are suited to you and what careers are available. The workshop will conclude with a program on goal development in which participants will draw up a personal plan of action. For details, call (540) 231-6285.
