George E. Stern, who was known for setting international standards of construction, died March 19. Stern, the Earle B. Norris research professor emeritus of wood construction, essentially pioneered the wood sciences program at Virginia Tech and was the creator of the Stern Fastener and Pallet Research Laboratory and the inventor of the particle board. "George was especially known throughout the world for designing fasteners, or nails and screws, and as the pioneer in pallet design and construction," said Department Head of Wood Science and Forest Products Geza Ifju. Because of his lifetime of contributions toward researching and improving fasteners, Stern was known as "Mr. Nail." Although retired, Stern still came to Tech almost daily to work on his research projects and gave presentations around the world on his findings.

Naomi Wilson-Nicely, chapel manager for the War Memorial Chapel, died April 10. She began working at Virginia Tech in 1973, when she was hired part-time to help her father, Franklin Thompson, who was the watchman/host of the chapel. In 1976, she was hired as the full-time chapel manager. Her assistant, Pricilla Soucek, noted that the chapel was a big part of Wilson-Nicely's life, adding that "Through the chapel, she touched a lot of peoples' lives." Claressa Morton, associate director for university unions and student activities and Wilson-Nicely's supervisor, said, "Naomi was without a doubt one of the most loyal, dependable employees I've ever had the privilege to work with. She will be missed by the entire university community."

Duncan Lyle Kinnear, an alumnus and professor emeritus of education and psychology and the university's official historian, died June 6. The well-known author of a comprehensive compilation of the university's history, The First 100 Years: A History of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Kinnear earned his bachelor's in biology from Tech in 1933 and his master's in vocational education in 1938. Kinnear taught at Virginia Tech from 1936 until 1971. Warren Strother, a long-time friend, noted that Kinnear's long association and familiarity with Virginia Tech, as well as his "mass of information about the early history of VPI," led to his being asked to write the almost 500-page volume of Tech's first 100 years. Strother added that when Kinnear was asked to give talks about Tech's past, he made "cheerfully irreverent comments on the earlier years of the land-grant college."
