FACULTY AND FRIENDS DEATHS

Albert Earl "Bert" Moyer, head of the Department of History, died Dec. 19, 2000. He had taught the history of science at Tech since 1977 and had served as department head since 1995. The author of a biography of American physicist Simon Newcomb, A Scientist's Voice in American Culture, Moyer was remembered at a memorial service for his advocacy for the history department and faculty; his goodness, honesty, and passion; and his "simple, little, nameless, now-remembered acts of kindness and love."

William F. Murphy Jr., an associate professor and leader in distance and continuing education in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Virginia Cooperative Extension, and Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station, died on Jan. 4, 2001, after working at Virginia Tech for almost 25 years. He designed and produced satellite video teleconferences and distance learning programs, earning the Award of Excellence in Teleconferencing from the Agricultural Communicators in Education and the Most Distinguished Program award from the national University Teleconference Network. An award will be established in his name to be given annually to the Extension worker producing an outstanding project in information technology.

Ralph "Rusty" St. George Nichols '40, a noted swing musician, died on Jan. 20, 2001. A trombonist and scat singer, he played with several big bands following World War II, among them the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and the Charlie Spivak Orchestra. From the 1960s-80s, he played with the Freddy Lee Orchestra out of Roanoke, Va. Later he organized the Rusty Nichols Big Band for special events in the Lynchburg, Va., area.

Harold P. Marshall '45, M.S. '48, professor emeritus of the College of Engineering, died on Jan. 21, 2001. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees at Tech before joining the faculty of the mechanical engineering department in 1948. He retired in 1988.
