OBITUARIES

Herman Doswald, a Virginia Tech professor and dean emeritus, died on Jan. 8. During his career at Virginia Tech, Doswald served as a professor, department head, and dean. From 1979 to 1984, he was the head of what is now the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures. At the College of Arts and Sciences, he served as an associate dean from 1984 to 1986, interim dean in 1986, and then dean until 1994. Doswald continued as a professor of German until his retirement in 1996. Virginia Tech later granted him emeritus status as both professor and dean.
Dennis John Kilper, professor emeritus in the School of Architecture + Design in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, died on Jan. 14. A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1975, Kilper retired in 2009, when he was honored as T.A. Carter Professor Emeritus by the Board of Visitors. During his 34-year tenure at Virginia Tech, Kilper provided strong leadership while serving as co-chair of the undergraduate architecture program and chair of the graduate architecture program.
Dwight (Kreg) Kregloe died on Friday, Feb. 16. He was employed with Virginia Tech for 29 years. Prior to his retirement in 1996, he worked in human resources as a senior compensation analyst.
Judith Lynn “Judy” Midkiff of Midlothian died Feb. 21. Midkiff had been employed by Virginia Tech through Virginia Cooperative Extension since 1987.
Larry Moore, professor emeritus of business information technology, died Feb. 14. A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1970, Moore was a key administrator in what is now the Pamplin College of Business during the ’70s and early ’80s. During his 37-year career at Virginia Tech, Moore served on more than 200 departmental, college, and university committees. He also served as director of University Financial Planning and Analysis and as director of University Planning.
Wayne Purcell, alumni distinguished professor emeritus of agricultural and applied economics in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, died Feb. 17. Purcell began his faculty role at Virginia Tech in 1978 and retired in 2005. His 27-year career at Virginia Tech was marked by major program growth and numerous individual successes as a nationally and internationally recognized expert on prices, price discovery, and price risk management.
Daniel J. Schneck, professor emeritus of engineering science and mechanics, died Nov. 26. Schneck taught a variety of courses in biomedical engineering and engineering science and mechanics as well as medical and musical science. He held the W.S. "Pete" White Endowed Chair from 1999 until his retirement and was designated as faculty emeritus in 2001, after 28 years of service.
Henry W. Tieleman, professor emeritus of engineering science and mechanics, died Jan. 12. Tieleman taught a variety of courses in fluid mechanics, boundary layer meteorology, wind engineering, and bluff body aerodynamics. His research on wind behavior and its effects on structural integrity was funded by NASA and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Tieleman retired from Virginia Tech and was designated as faculty emeritus in 1997, continuing with research and advising activities long afterward.
Col. Thomas Owen “T.O.” Williams III, chairman emeritus of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Alumni board, died March 10. Williams was a member of the Corps of Cadets and led the Highty-Tighties as drum major in 1959, his senior year. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 27 years and retired with the rank of colonel in 1986. Williams worked as director of personnel for the Montgomery County Public Schools, as director of programs in the office of University Development at Virginia Tech, as associate director for the Virginia Tech Alumni Association, and as director of development for the Virginia Tech Alumni and Conference Center Campaign, where he oversaw fundraising for the Holtzman Alumni Center and Skelton Conference Center.
